NK Eide
Painting

Portraits: Rip and True, 2023. Pastel, charcoal and graphite on paper. 17" x 17" (24” x 24” framed).
This work is featured in the PBS KVIE Art Auction 2023 September 29 – October 1 on TV (KVIE-HD) and livestream (kvie.org/artauction).
It is part of a series that explores the notion, “What started as a still life ends up as a portrait.” The idea that what starts as a rendering of objects takes on the characteristics of a portrait because of the way the objects are arranged and expressed. The work triggers us to attribute human traits and emotions to these non-human objects. This phenomenon is often referred to as anthropomorphism. In particular, this series of work explores tools and other objects that craftspeople often form relationships with as part of their work, in this case hammers.
