Sac Open Studios 2026 Artist Demos

Sac Open Studios artists have planned a number of creative an engaging demos for tour-goers like you. Attend an artist demo to learn a new technique, create a piece of art to take home, and have some artsy fun. With demos ranging from painting and printmaking to ceramics and cyanotype, there’s something for every art lover to enjoy!

Please note: Demos are held art Artists’ studios, NOT at Verge.

WEEKEND 1: SEPTEMBER 12 – 13

Clay Head Creations

Artist: Pam Avery, 108A

  • When: September 12, Saturday 11:00 AM
  • Description: Have fun building a small clay head using the pinch pot method. Learn techniques to form a head shape with facial features to take home to glaze and fire on your own.
  • For ages 13 and up

Learn to Create a Lovely Torn Paper Collage

Artist: Carol Hawkins, 155A

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday 1-3pm & Sunday, 11am-3pm
  • Description: A paper collage is like a painting but made from torn paper instead of paint. Guests will learn about composition, color families and application, to make beautiful artwork with paper pieces.

Shibori Resist-Dyeing with Plant and Mushroom Dyes

Artist: Tanya Lieberman, 140A

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday 10am & Sunday 1pm
  • Description: Learn about shibori, the art of Japanese shapes resist dyeing, and how to use these techniques with natural dyes made from plants, mushrooms, and lichen. You will see a demonstration of several techniques, help reveal some completed projects, and try out a shibori technique using a plant or mushroom dye on a silk handkerchief.

Fiber to Form: Sculpture with Natural Materials

Artist: Antonia Price, 140B

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday 1pm & Sunday 10am
  • Description: In this demo Price will show examples of basic handcraft techniques and participants will try their hands at making small sculptures with a variety of natural materials.

Creating an Animal Out of Clay

Artist: Paula Swayne 144D

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm
  • Description: This will be a working studio, so while you are touring, you can also watch the progress of our clay creations.

Learn to Paint Your Pet

Artist: Teresa Carle, 157

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday & Sunday 11am-1pm
  • Description: Learn how to paint your pet’s portrait! Participants will learn to paint a 4″ wooden ornament of your beloved pet with instructions and assistance from artist Teresa Carle.

Glass Blowing Demonstrations

Artist: Rene Steinke, 104D

  • When: September 12, Saturday 10am
  • Description: Demonstrations of Glass blowing technique and creation of various forms. Participants will learn the subtleties and techniques of the age old art of glass blowing.

Tapigami “Applying Imagination to Masking Tape”

Artist: Tapigami, 104A

  • When: September 13, Sunday 10am-12pm
  • Description: Artist Danny Scheible will demonstrate the process of manipulating masking tape into sculpture. Participants will learn the basic elements of Tapigami and create sculptures out of masking tape.

Wheel-Throwing Pottery Demo

Artist: Laura Kneppel, 151

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday 12-2pm & Sunday 12pm
  • Description: A Demonstration on basic functional pottery0making as well as instructions on how to use the wheel to make clay forms that can become sculpture pieces. The opportunity to spin clay may be available, depending on the participation of attendee.

Stained Glass Pressed Flower Sun Catcher Creation

Artist: Lindsey Metz, 104C

  • When: September 12, Saturday 1-3pm
  • Description: Enjoy the process of creating a pressed flower sun catcher using colorful glass and bevels. Participants will get to watch and engage with the process of creating a pressed flower design, and learn how glass is foiled and soldered to create a finished sun catcher!

Layered Transparent Paper Collage

Artist: Kate Farrall, 113G

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday 11am
  • Description: Explore how layered translucent paper and acrylic skins build unexpected depth and texture as each blends and transforms a collage with each sheer layer. Participants will learn how to use transparency and layering to build a collage piece with real visual depth.

Live Laser-Cutting and Leather-Stamping

Artist: Jake Castro, 100A

  • When: September 12 & 12, Saturday 2-4pm & Sunday 12-3pm
  • Description: Watch artist Jake Castro cut and stamp leather goods live at his studio. From vegetable-tanned leather to a finished piece and using a CO2 laser and custom-made stamps. Come and see how traditional leathercraft and digital fabrication work together and get a deeper look at the tools and process behind every piece.

Animals of a Kindred Spirit or Just Fascinating!

Artist: Kathleen S. Farros, 108B

  • When: September 13, Sunday 11am
  • Description: Participants will create an animal in which they connect, utilizing the clay-slab over-a-form method. They will view animal sculptures from varying artists and cultures and learn to work with clay slabs & clay building and texturing.

From Plate to Print: An Intaglio

Artist: Chanel Mace, 112M

  • When: September 13, Sunday 11am
  • Description: Explore the art of printmaking through the fascinating world of intalgio. This step-by-step demonstration will guide you through the etching process, from inking a copper plate to pulling the final print. Leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of this timeless printmaking tradition.

Printmaking Demonstration

Artist: Myrtle Press, 112P

  • When: September 12 & 13, Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm
  • Description: This demonstration showcases how Myrtle Press artists create orginal prints using a variety of printmaking techniques. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the printmaking process and leave with a greater appreciation for the skill, craftsmanship, and creativity behind each print.

WEEKEND 2: SEPTEMBER 19 – 20

Creating Light and Depth: Oil Landscape Demo

Artist: Ashleigh Anderson, 245

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 11am and 3pm
  • Description: Get an exclusive, behind the scenes look at how a traditional oil landscape comes to life. You’ll discover how establishing a simple, single-color foundation sets the stage for creating beautiful color, glowing light, and lifelike depth.

Slab-Built Masks: Surface and Form

Artist: Jason L Edmonds, 205C

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday 12pm
  • Description: Jason’s demonstration explores the process of creating expressive ceramic masks from textured clay slabs. Participants will learn techniques for building form, incorporating surface texture, and developing character and movement in slab-built masks.

Quilling

Artist: Celeste Budd, 267B

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 1-3pm
  • Description: Paper Quilling is the art of turning small strips of paper into art. Each participant will have the opportunity to use the quilling tool and make the basic coil.

Fine Art Screen Printing

Artist: Steven Cranston, 228A

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 11am and 3pm
  • Description: During this demo, Steven will print several one color serigraph of his original art. Participants will see how the process is done and learn about screen printing on paper.
  • Child friendly

Hand Building with Clay

Artist: Darcci Robertson, 269D

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 2pm
  • Description: Darcci Robertson will demonstrate how to create a pinch pot. Participants will be provided with a ball of clay. Learning how to use texture tools and will be able to apply glaze to their pots. All finished projects will receive a bisque fire, provided by Darrci, and return to participants at a future date.

Beyond Flat: The Art of Textured Papermaking

Artist: Bev Barnett, 242

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 12pm
  • Description: Discover how paper pulp offers endless possibilities for textile, sculptural artwork using everyday household recycling and botanical inclusions. In this hands-on demo, you will learn the basics of textured papermaking and form your own one-of-a-kind sheet to take home.

I Screen, You Screen, We All Screen Print!

Artist: Emerald Greene, 239

  • When: September 19 & 20, Saturday & Sunday 2pm
  • Description: Visitors will be welcomed in for a insider looksie at the ins and outs of the screen printing process. Gear up and get messy as we apply print making techniques to a print of your own. Participants will leave with a greater appreciation for band posters and graphic tees and walk away with two hand-pulled prints richer! No previous art experience required!
