About Shirley Hazlett

The process of making art is inventive; chance is a partner.

When creating sculptures, I seek out garage sale and thrift store finds that call to me. Akin to John Cage's music-making through random notes, I arrange found objects until a sculpture reveals itself, conveying a pressing concept. Directed by the emerging sculpture itself, I combine, contort, paint and re-evaluate the found objects until a sculpture comes to light; something entirely new emerges from things discarded. Guided by the memory of sculptures by Betye Saar and Louise Nevelson, I construct.

When creating two dimensional work, chance also is a factor. I set parameters of concept, size, media, and begin to create, watercolor on paper, acrylic on silk, combined paper fragments, or ink monotypes, the image itself points to a resolution; I engage in a mental dialog with the materials and concept at hand until the final image reveals itself, with a little coaxing.

Whether sculpting with found items, painting collaging or printmaking, art is an extension of my being at a specific point and place in time.

My signature acrylic on silk paintings were featured in her 2012 solo show at Axis Gallery, reviewed in Square Cylinder by art critic David Roth and recommended by Sac Bee Art Critic Victoria Dalkey

I proudly helped to establish the Sacramento studio tour and have participated nearly every year since its 2006 inception.

I look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you to see new work this year - in a new shared venue - a private backyard in Elk Grove with three other artists. Four established artists in one location. Good conversation, tasty tidbits, peace pins and immersive art will be available to be enjoyed.
